A dairy farm that was built almost two years ago has been specially fitted with underfloor electric heating and heated compost to keep young, vulnerable cows warm even in severe weather conditions.
During cold snaps, without the underfloor heating tiles and heated compost the cows would be at an increased risk of suffering from frozen teats and frozen ears. Not only does the floor heating provide warmth, but electric under floor heating also provides additional heat- which helps to dry the newborns hair coats- helping to keep them warm and dry too.
Keeping young calves warm using electric underfloor heating is highly important because it aids antibody absorption. One industry expert has said "They (the calves) just don’t absorb antibodies out of the colostrum well when they’re cold. You can give them all the colostrum you want, but they’re not getting the goodies out of it."
Ensuring that newborn calves have a clean, dry and warm environment in which to live is one of a number of the most important factors to a calf’s wellbeing according to the Dairy Calf & Heifer Association.
These factors have all been thoroughly evaluated and assessed and have been determined as the most important elements of a cow’s environment as they can have a significant impact on the health, wellbeing and development of an entire herd.
Having electric underfloor heating systems installed in an animal’s environment is not totally unheard of- there have been various stories in the press recently where animals have been treated to a little luxury by having underfloor heating mats fitted to their pen, cage or other designated area. At the beginning of the year, floor heating was installed in one zoo as a way of reducing the zoo’s carbon emissions. It was also recently reported that Wayne Rooney had also had numerous underfloor heating kits installed in his million pound home; one was installed beneath the driveway as a way of preventing snow from blocking his cars path onto the road, and one was fitted to his dog’s kennels on the request of his animal lover wife Colleen.
This trend seems to have taken off around the world also, with zoos and other institutions beginning to wise up to the benefits of utilising a floor heating system. Very recently a zoo in Taiwan had floor heating installed in the goats enclosure, to mimic the goats natural environment.
